Third Star This is a good choice for anyone interested in social change and making a difference. Community development is about helping local people develop the skills they need to influence and improve their quality of life. This includes removing the barriers that prevent people from participating in the issues that affect them.

Community development is all around us with people working for local authorities, or voluntary and charitable bodies, to bring about change. As an apprentice, you might be active in one community, or maybe have a community development aspect to your job (for example, community-based learning, regeneration and renewal, or community safety).
Depending on your employer, you could be doing anything from setting up a disease prevention programme to establishing training opportunities for excluded groups.
Whatever your role, you'll learn how to identify a communities needs and problems; raise public awareness; work with all sorts of people; organise events; develop strategies for change; and manage budgets and raise funds.
You'll probably work in a supporting role and as you then progress to more responsibility and a wider range of opportunities will come your way.
